This Day Bike trip from Rome includes a visit to Romes first port, Ostia (known as Ostia Antica now).
Close by there are also the ruins of Romes later ports built by emperors Claudius and Tiberius, but on this bicycle tour we focus on Ostia Antica.
We will cycle towards the Mediterranean sea alongside the Tiber river, to the archaeological site of “Ostia Antica” where we will then visit this ancient roman city.
Daily @ 9am
On this full day bike trip from Rome to Ostia Antica we will cycle through fields and roman countryside on our way. The ancient roman port ‘Ostia Antica’ is situated along the course of where the Tiber river used to flow, different to where it now flows as the area silted up and the old port and adjacent town abandoned and buried over the centuries.
Thanks to this Ostia Antica is a perfectly preserved roman town; complete with floor and wall mosaics, an amphitheater, shops and peoples homes makes this archaeological site an excellent example of ancient roman living conditions and daily life.
Participants on this ride will be provided with a guided tour of Ostia Antica as well as snacks and lunch along the way.
The return journey will be by train, the station being ideally located outside the entrance to Ostia Antica.
Choose a bicycle, prepare bike bag (provided), stow non essential gear in locker.
Using a newly opened bike lane running along the river and through the countryside will be bring us to Ostia Antica
Take a guided tour of the archaeological site “Ostia Antica”
Sit down lunch in a local trattoria overlooking the sea at Fiumicino
From Ostia Antica we take the train back to Rome.
